They fail to acknowledge the layers, the complexity that can be associated with everything in this world. They allow everything in the Universe only one definition, an explanation that can be formed from the most basic, surface level interpretation. They see the world through one lens only: their own. They are contained in a world of harsh stereotypes and the need to fit in. High school students are at the peak of their hormones, they are fighting insecurities, and they are surrounded by some of the most judgmental people they will ever encounter in their lives. These are all questions I’m still struggling with. How do we take these experiences we are dealing with or that the character is dealing with and grow from them? Learn from them? Become better or change our lives because of them? I see a lot of students who are able to connect literary situations to the real world, but this is where things get difficult. For example, the two characters are in love, and so am I! or The boys don’t get along, and there are many people who I don’t get along with. It can be easy to connect major events to our lives. In order to find true value in a learning environment, a student must first be able to forge a connection between the content and life. Each of these items, to some extent, proves measurable in order to determine success.īut, true achievement in the classroom doesn’t stop there. I can provide vocabulary words for students to memorize, explain grammatical errors and provide solutions, and teach research and organizational techniques. I can help them to analyze literature and think critically. I can help develop a student’s writing skills. I can teach literacy and reading with a purpose.
